Re: '3-Sweep' Software Can Extract 3D Objects Out of a Single Photo. JJMack Sep 10, 2013 7:27 PM. Where 3-Sweep is a 3d Extraction. Where the background is. With just a few mouse clicks, 3-Sweep software can extract an 3D object out of a photograph and turns it into a 3D, editable creation.
At SIGGRAPH ASIA 2013, researchers from Scientists Tel-Aviv University in Israel and Tsinghua University in Beijing have presented an experimental software capable of recognize and extract 3D models from simple photographs.
As the below video shows, the software is capable of easily recognizing not only the basic shapes , but also geometric properties such as circular sections, symmetry, etc., just by manually “sweeping” in three different spatial directions.
The software also integrates a complex algorithm for filling the missing textures of the 3D object and of the background, based on the context – an advanced version of Photoshop’s Content Aware filters.
The combination of these tools allows to extract a textured 3D model in a matter of seconds. The 3D object can then be moved, rotated, modified, duplicated and exported.
While designing accurate 3D models will always require more advanced skills – at least for the near future – in the coming years these technologies will be likely to revolutionize many 2D and 3D applications.
The original paper “Extracting Editable Objects from a Single Photo” was presented at SIGGRAPH ASIA 2013 by Tao Chen, Zhe Zhu, Ariel Shamir, Shi-Min Hu and Daniel Cohen-Or.
